Friday Funnies

Friday Funnies: "
Here’s some Internet/computer humor I got from my friend Beth.

No one knows anyone like this. Seriously.

I have NO idea what this is like.

Honest, officer, I wasn’t trying to tamper with the evidence!

Thursday Thankfulness

Thursday Thankfulness: "

imageA few years ago, our friend Sherri did a post on how she had learned that putting your router into a metal strainer boosted your wireless signal. She tried it and found it worked, so we tried it too. Lo and behold, it did work. Our router stayed in the strainer until I needed to strain the spaghetti or strawberries or something, and once it was washed, it went back to the router.

Then, as many of you know, we lost our connection.

Eventually we unplugged the router and put the strainer away, and did what we could to cope with a piggyback connection. The connection is so bad that there are times where we can’t get a connection for hours, sometimes even a few days, at which point we’d run to the library to get online. Or the connection will flicker, sometimes dropping once every couple of minutes because the signal is so weak. Try uploading a blog post with that!

A couple of weeks ago, Darc asked me if I thought the strainer thing would work on the laptop. I shrugged. “It can’t be any worse than it is now.”

So we propped the strainer on it’s side around the laptop’s wireless card, and wowee, it was insta-boost! I don’t mean to say we have a zippy connection now or anything, but it has been more stable, and when it does go down, it doesn’t seem to stay down as long as it did before. Still can’t watch videos or anything, but I can blog and comment and read. Email is still often slow for me, but hey, I am trying not to complain. Sure, nothing beats a high-speed connection on a brand new high speed computer, but in the meantime, this is what I have now, and it’s a little better than what I was trying to deal with before, so I’m thankful.

What’s your thankfulness this week? Do you have one?

And thanks to my beloved husband for giving me the idea for this post. :D

Wednesday Wondering

Wednesday Wondering: "

imageI was going through my blogroll a few days ago, clearing out broken links, blogs that have been all but abandoned, updating new blogs – general blogroll maintenance. I’m sure you know the drill. Sometimes we just do that. As I did, I had a few things flit through my mind. I recalled the person who (quite some time ago) sent Darc an email requesting that he remove them from his blogroll. In trying to determine if it was a spam generated email or a legitimate one, we discovered that said person had decided to believe a lot of their own misconceptions about us (and it turned out about others as well) and was actually holding some amount of hostility toward us for reasons we never really figured out. Such is life and the nature of the blogging world, I suppose.

And then I got to thinking, why do we do that? Why is the blogroll used that way? I think similar things occur on Facebook too, with the friends list. “I’m going to take you off my blogroll!” “I’m going to un-friend you!” I remembered – and cringed – when I was about 7 and threatened the neighbor girl with “I won’t be your best friend anymore!” I have no recollection why, but I do remember saying it. We all did that, and I’m sure kids across the world do that still. Why was that such a threat? That never occurred to my 7-year-old brain. Did I think friendship with me was such a prize? Did I think I could control her? Did I think she cared? Did I think she had no other friend options? I don’t even know, but I do recall that feeling of wanting to bend her to my will somehow, to make her do what I wanted. And I thought my friendship was the tool I could use to do that.

Boy, was I dumb! I was also 7.

Eventually we grow up, or think we do anyway! LOL I know lots of “grown-ups” who are stuck on 7 in lots of ways! No doubt you do too. It makes me sad to know that. I have learned in the years since then, how very valuable friendship is, how it needs to be cherished and nurtured and not taken for granted, and certainly not used at a threat or manipulation. It is a gift. Loyalty means a great deal to me.

And a blogroll is not a litmus test of anyone’s friendship.

I like to think I’ve grown up a little since those long ago days when I was 7. Or 17. Or 37. Maturity should be a constant goal, shouldn’t it? When I was little I wanted nothing more than to be a grown-up. I thought I would hit 21, and I would “arrive.” I had no idea it would be a lifetime endeavor! If I had, I might not have wanted it so much. ;)

Monday Moppets

Monday Moppets: "

imageWell. I learned on Friday that the city has installed new storm warning sirens right next to the complex here. G’head, ask me how I learned this. *eyeroll* Oh yeah, we had stormage over the weekend. Lots of flooding in the area, apparently. We, personally, aren’t affected by any of the flooding, but I guess we got dumped on pretty good. I think I read something like 7” of rain that night.

Anyway, with the new system so close, I couldn’t help but think of the War of the Worlds sirens. I went outside to investigate, because I’d missed the announcements and was wondering if they’d play over again. With all the A/C units running, the loudspeaker sounded more like something at a drive-through restaurant. But that siren! Doggone! I think I’m still kind of deaf from it.

My son doesn’t do storms very well. We went through this a couple of years ago too. Stormy Weather. He gets all freaked out and this time was no different. He hangs on to the notion that if he hears the alarms, it means kiss your butt goodbye, you’re going to DIE. I keep telling him it’s just a warning, but it hasn’t sunk in yet. Darc and I have both tried to talk to him, reason with him, and what follows was the closest we came to getting through to him.

Dad: “Your best bet of getting through any situation is to not freak out – stay calm so you can think clearly.”
Son: “I think that’s clearly impossible.”

I couldn’t help it. I started cracking up. My son is witty! LOL Which frustrates the crap out of me sometimes. My effort went like this:

Mom: “You can’t let fear rule your life like that.”
Son: “Everybody’s afraid of something … and I’ve chosen MINE!”

*sigh*

Watch, he’ll grow up to be one of those storm chasers and deny he was ever afraid of them.

The MiniNess is glad to be 5 now, but claims it doesn’t feel any different than 4. She loved her cake – she chose a white one so I could add food coloring to the mix and make it green, her current favorite color. With pink frosting. :) She had fun helping me make it, and it’s so nice to have a little helper in the kitchen.

Oh, and during the storms, she thought it was a riot to sit in the dry bathtub with her shoes on. My kids are so different from one another!

And how was your weekend?
